A Blackheath Eyecare Love Story: Amiee’s Magical Wedding in Bali

Many of you will remember Amiee working at Blackheath Eyecare as a Dispensing Optician before she moved to head office for both of our practices. You may have met her when visiting the practice, at one of our events, or seen her painting our window displays.

Behind the scenes this past year, she has also been planning something very special – an intimate wedding in Jimbaran, Bali, Indonesia. Amiee swapped the glasses for Contact Lenses for Weddings. We knew many of you would love to hear how it all went, so here’s what Amiee had to share (plus some snaps!).

Planning a Wedding Abroad

“Planning has had its ups and downs. You basically hand over your life savings to someone with your plans and just hope it’s executed well. Whilst finding vendors wasn’t my burden to bear, not having full control was pretty stressful! My husband, however, was relaxed the whole time. He knew it would bother me if things weren’t perfect, so he happily took on the role of Bali welcome ambassador and tour guide for all of our friends and family – while I handled the design details.
Thankfully all the hard work and trust paid off. The designs I worked on were executed so well, and my vision came to life. For those that know me already, you’ll have noticed I’m a little eccentric… so for me this was the perfect excuse to be as extra as I wanted!”

A Community Union

“It was an absolutely wonderful warm gathering of family and friends from both Bali and the UK. It means everything to Len and I that our worlds collided and our friends met, laughed, and formed friendships with each other. It really felt like a community union, not just a marriage between the two of us.

Wedding Drama (Because There Always Is!)

“A wedding wouldn’t be a wedding without some drama, would it? A certain groom decided he’d go on an off-roading motorcycle tour a week before the wedding. And yes – despite being an experienced track rider – he managed to get himself into a minor accident and injured his ankle and foot.
Cue me marching him straight to A&E. Thankfully nothing was broken, but it did mean we couldn’t practise our first dance. By the wedding day he could walk for short periods, and we pulled off a dance that I think went pretty well. It took all my might not to say ‘I told you so’… but let’s be honest, I definitely did tell him so – and he knows it!

A Bridal Entrance with a Twist

“For his entrance, Len came down the aisle with his groomsmen to a live instrumental of Michael Bublé’s ‘Everything’ – complete with a few jokey hops on his dodgy ankle, which got him a round of applause.
For my entrance, though, I had a little surprise up my sleeve. Some of you may know that I love to sing, but I rarely perform publicly. Since the passing of my grandfather, and with little else in our theme being traditionally ‘weddingy,’ I decided I’d sing.
Hidden behind a huge plant (in a Vera Wang Lucienne ballgown, which, yes, had been vacuum-packed into a backpack for the flight!), I sang the bridal party’s entrance song with our live band. Once my bridesmaids reached the end of the aisle, I stepped out and sang the rest of ‘Is That Alright?’ by Lady Gaga myself. I’m not sure how I held it together, especially seeing everyone else crying too.

Food, Drinks, and That Cocktail

The celebrations were full of good food, happy tears, and even better company. Guests enjoyed a Balinese/Chinese fusion wedding breakfast, fruit and traditional Balinese desserts, and later a carrot cake – the wedding cake flavour the guests themselves voted for! Amiee and Len figured that since they were the ones to eat it, they should have the choice of flavour.

“One thing that went down really well was the cocktail menu we created. We had to source and supply our own drinks, so we made light of it and came up with our own cocktails, naming them after things personal to us. The clear favourite – and ours too – was ‘Where Are My Flapjacks?!’. That one will now be our ‘entertainment cocktail’ whenever friends visit!

Here’s the recipe so you can try it:

Where Are My Flapjacks?!

  • 2oz whiskey of choice

  • 2oz cocoa brown liqueur of choice

  • 10ml simple syrup

  • Serve over ice, garnish with star anise for aroma

Gratitude and Good Wishes

“Of course, one of the things about getting married overseas is that not everyone can come. I was sad not to share this occasion with everyone from Blackheath Eyecare and Eyediology (we even asked Ravi if he’d pay for everyone’s flights… but that was a polite no, worth a shot though!).
What really touched us was receiving a video and messages of congratulations. Len and I were honestly so moved.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I feel blessed. Even on bad days, difficult times, or tube strike days, I remember how lucky I am to have met such wonderful people here in Blackheath, to have a fabulous team I can call friends, and to have met my husband in this area. How lucky am I to have been in the right place at the right time? Ultimately, all tied up in a bow with our wedding day.

The Wedding Eyewear Question

“Oh, and for those who were wondering – yes, we ditched the glasses on the wedding day and opted for clear contact lenses! Honestly, it’s easier than you think.
