Blackheath Eyecare Team Run – Half Marathon Running in Glasses, Eyewear Advice, Tips & More

Blackheath Eyecare Team Tackles the Half Marathon Once Again, Running with Glasses.

Running with glasses From Tower Hill to Greenwich: A Scenic 13.1 Miles

On 7th September, the annual half marathon kicked off from Tower Hill and finished at the iconic Cutty Sark in Greenwich. This year, just two runners from Blackheath Eyecare took part – our very own Ravi, the owner, and Richard, our back-of-house extraordinaire, running with glasses.

These two aren’t strangers to the route. After running it in 2024 and clocking 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 25 seconds, they returned this year and completed the race in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 24 seconds. No fancy new training plan, no coach – just consistent effort and a love for the run.

Consistency Over Intensity: Their Everyday Routine

Richard has been running regularly for over two years. Ravi has always enjoyed running but became consistent after the pandemic. Interestingly, their “training” isn’t tied to a start date – they simply run. Often.

The two regularly run from Blackheath to the practice in Shoreditch, trading in public transport for fresh air and natural movement. It’s a part of their lifestyle, not a seasonal commitment. When asked if they trained specifically for this year’s race, they replied in unison:

“We never stopped running

What’s Next? Looking Ahead to 2026

With another half marathon under their belts, both Ravi and Richard are already planning for 2026. Their goal isn’t necessarily to beat their time but to maintain the fitness and habits that keep them performing at a high level.

Their preparation will include:

  1. Running longer distances to build endurance

  2. Adding weight training to support strength and resilience

  3. Incorporating mobility work to improve speed and movement efficiency

Who knows – maybe one day a full marathon is on the cards.

At Blackheath Eyecare, we’re incredibly proud of these two for representing both Blackheath and Greenwich so well. We’re excited to support them again next year!

Thinking of Running? Here Are Ravi and Richard’s 5 Top Tips

Whether you’re new to running or returning after a break, here are five tips to help you get started:

  1. Start with walks

If you’re not already active, begin by walking regularly. You can build this into light jogging over time.

  2. Small changes make big progress

Don’t go all in at once. Consistency is key. Start small and let habits grow naturally.

  3. Set realistic goals

Aim for small wins. It’s better to achieve and feel good than aim too high and lose motivation.

  4. Try different activities

Running isn’t the only way to get fit. Mix in cycling, swimming, or dancing – anything you enjoy.

  5. Get a running buddy

Invite a friend or family member to join you. It adds fun, keeps you accountable, and takes the pressure off.

The Benefits of Running: What They Say

Richard:

“A huge benefit for me is that I’ve incorporated running and cycling into my everyday life. I don’t use public transport anymore. I now have two physical options that are functional and good for me.”

Ravi:

“Since running, I’ve got more energy. I don’t get tired during the day and it’s helped me focus at work. It makes me a happier human. I’ve even stopped using my car – I just run or walk instead!

Can You Run with Glasses? Absolutely!

Both Ravi and Richard wear glasses daily – and both tackle running differently.

Whilst contact lenses are a great option but as eyewear enthusiasts, they opt not to wear contact lenses when they run, but that doesn’t mean their vision is compromised. With the right eyewear and lens choice. their vision whilst running with glasses isn’t something they need to worry about.

Glasses for Runners: Plenty of Options

There are plenty of eyewear choices for runners:

  1. Transitions lenses

  2. Polarised lenses

  3. Clear prescription lenses

  4. Wraparound sports frames

  5. Flexible, secure sports glasses

Richard wore a wraparound sports frame with Transitions lenses during the race.

When it’s dark they’re clear, when it’s sunny they go dark – perfect for any time of day. The wrap frame keeps them secure while I run and cycle too.

Did you know we can often glaze your existing sports frames (if suitable) with prescription lenses? Why not ask our team if your frames lenses could be upgraded?

Final Thoughts

Running is more than just a sport for Ravi and Richard – it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a total beginner, their story proves that consistency, small changes, and the right mindset can go a long way.

We’ll be cheering them on in 2026 – and we hope to inspire a few more runners from our community too. If you’re thinking of starting your own journey, you know where we are.
